Diagnosing glaucoma is not always easy. A careful evaluation of the optic nerve continues to be essential to diagnosis and treatment. The most important concern is protecting your sight. Doctors look at many factors before making decisions about your treatment.
There are several types of glaucoma. The two main types are open-angle and angle-closure. Early detection through yearly comprehensive eye exams is the key to protecting your vision. You may be at high risk for this disease if you have a family history of it. In that case let your eye doctor know so that additional testing may be scheduled to determine if you do indeed have glaucoma.
If you have been diagnosed with glaucoma, medication may be necessary along with regular check-ups. We have doctors that work exclusively with our glaucoma patients. They monitor the pressures of your eyes and your optic nerve and adjust medications when needed.
Age is not a factor with glaucoma; babies have been born with it and it can appear at any time during your life. Lost vision cannot be restored and there is no cure. Diagnosis is the first step in preserving your vision.
