Dry Eye Syndrome

Dry eye syndrome describes insufficient tears on the eye's surface, which are needed to keep the eye lubricated and healthy. Sufferers of dry eye can experience eye redness, itchiness, a "foreign body" sensation and even watery eyes.

With each blink of the eyelids, tears are spread across the front surface of the eye. Tears have many purposes. They provide lubrication, reduce the risk of eye infection, wash away foreign matter in the eye, and keep the surface of the eyes smooth and clear.  Dry eye syndrome interrupts the tear production and drainage.  Dry eye syndrome does not just target people over age 65. However, the largest number are older individuals.

The causes of dry eye are many:

  • Age
  • Gender
  • Medications
  • Medical Conditions
  • Environmental
  • Refractive surgeries

When seeing your doctor let them know all your medications and medical problems to properly diagnose your condition. Let the doctor determine what is and isn't important. See your doctor regularly and stay on the regimen he or she prescribes.

Dry eye syndrome can be helped with the proper care and medications.
